May 15, 1972 Meeting Minutes

ref: reel020614 date: 1972-05-15 content: The regular meeting of the Appomattox Town Council was held on Monday, May 15, 1972 at 7:30 P.M. in the Council Room. Mayor H. B. Pack presiding.

Members present were: Mrs. Calvin Robinson, T. E. Conner, Burke Guill, Ivey Holland, Martin L. Webb, and R. C. Hubbard.

The meeting was opened with a prayer.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.

Mr. J. T. Guill, Jr. appeared before the Council to discuss the loss of business in downtown Appomattox and to request the Council to allow him to sell beer on Sunday after 12:00 to 6:00 P.M.

Holland moved and Hubbard seconded that a request be made for a soil survey for land use as a Sanitary Land Fill.

Mr. Webb reported that he had discussed the radio system with Mr. Whitmer. Mr. Whitmer advised that we not install the Alert system until the County puts in their new system. Webb was authorized to contact the Board of Supervisors about a radio on the joint owned Tank truck. The town will pay their share of the cost.

Mrs. Robinson reported the contract for Well No. 7 had been awarded to Falwell Well Corporation for its low bid of $3,014.60. The contract has been signed and a letter to Falwell to begin construction has been sent.

Hubbard moved and Guill seconded that the following resolution be adopted:

WHEREAS, The Virginia Department of Highways held a Combined Location and Design Public Hearing on Tuesday, April 11, 1972, at 7:00 P.M. at Appomattox Court House and presented the plans on Route 131, Project 0131-006-101-C1, a project on Route 131 (Court Street) running from Route 460 to the intersection of Route 7691 and Main Street, a distance of 0.605 mile.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That this Council does hereby approve the plans as submitted at the Public Hearing with the knowledge that the Highway Department will consider and take the appropriate action on the requests made by citizens at the Public Hearing.

The need for a tape recorder for use in the Town work was discussed. Hubbard made the motion and Webb seconded to buy one.

Hubbard informed the Council the Insurance on the Ball Park expires this month. A discussion on whether to pay it again followed. Hubbard moved and Conner seconded that the Town pay it as a donation as they have in the past. The bill for repair on the lights at the Ball Park was ordered paid.
