January 18, 1954 Meeting Minutes

ref: reel020290 date: 1954-01-18 content: JANUARY 1954 The regular meeting of the Appomattox Town Council met in the Mayor's Office, on January 18, 1954, at 7:30 p.m., with Mayor Chas. F. James presiding. The following members were present: G. E. Smith, Mrs. C. H. Robinson, J. T. Almond, Chas. T. Moses, Jr. and Dr. D. A. Christian. Mrs. Bessie V. Caldwell, President of the Appomattox Garden Club and a delegation met with the Council and requested that they cooperate with the Garden Club and Woman's Club in a two weeks general clean up campaign in April and two weeks in the fall. They also requested more frequent cleaning of the street and straightening of street signs, and enforcing the parking regulations on Main and Church Streets. This was referred to the proper committee for the study and recommendations. The Committee appointed by the Mayor at the regular December meeting to look into the possibility of employing another full time policeman made their report. They recommended that the present full time policeman, Mr. E. J. Mitchell be transferred to night duty, his hours to be from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. A motion was made by Chas. T. Moses, Jr. seconded by Mrs. C. H. Robinson that the recommendation made by the Committee be accepted. Motion carried. A Motion was made by Chas. T. Moses, Jr., seconded by Mrs. C. H. Robinson that the Town Manager contact Mr. Garland Plunkett and see if he would audit the Town Books and what he would charge; if he could not do the auditing to contact Mr. Richard Neir in Lynchburg to see if he could do the auditing for us. Motion carried. A Motion was made by Chas. T. Moses, Jr. seconded by Mrs. C. H. Robinson that the Town pay Mr. E. T. Mitchell $13.85, one week's expenses on his car for his vacation. Motion carried.
